Bronko & Kata Plecas Family History

Bronko Plecas immigrated from Yugoslavia to the Nanaimo, British Columbia, CANADA area looking for work in the early 1900's.  He found his way into the coal mining workplace and worked as a butcher on the side. Later he sent back to Yugoslavia for a bride (as was the custom) and eventually married Kata Rabatich, a young woman from the Gospic', Lika area of Yugoslavia.

The couple set up hearth and home in Nanaimo and went on to have 10 children - 9 boys and 1 girl. 1 young son was stillborn in the late 1910's and another 2 year old boy, George, dies of "teething" during the early 1920's.  The family went to working on a farm in the South Wellington area, just south of Nanaimo. Bronko went to work for Britannia Mines, at Britannia Beach (near Squamish), British Coumbia on the mainland of BC and succumbed to miner's consumption in Kamloop's Tranquille hospital sanatorium just before Christmas 1935. This left Kata with the 7 boys and 1 girl to raise on her own. Majority of the boys went to work in the coal mines and also tended the farm. The three youngest children, Bob, Mildred and Andrew were under age 13 at this time. Kata spoke very little English and tried her best to keep the family together.

The farm was sold not to long after this, and the family moved up the hill in South Wellington to where the Plecas & Son Slaughter House & farm still stands today.  The old farm in the valley was bought by the Dave Stupich family who still seem to have ownership of that land today.

Kata passed away June 1967 in Nanaimo where she was living with one of her sons and dedicated batchelor, Nick. Nick had become a city engineer with only a grade 3 education by teaching himself how to read detailed blueprints, etc. Today there are 4 remaining children of Bronko (Branko in some records of the province) & Kata's, and all reside in the Nanaimo Area. There is also a substantial legacy left in Nanaimo with the Nicholas Plecas bursary awarded at Malaspina University-College and a handful of streets named Plecas.

As of October 2008, the remaining few are: Mildred Cuckovich, Bob Plecas & his wife Rose, and Andrew Plecas and his wife Marion.
